The Shining has enjoyed great success as Novel and Movie, and has served as a source of inspiration or homage repeatedly. The hotel has a myriad of strange and otherworldly events take place, be it the blood elevator, a certain strange moment shared between 2 individuals in a bedroom, the creepy twins and more.

Kubrick wanted the woman of Room 237 to remain a mystery to the viewer to increase the creep factor and time proved him right.

In the novel of The Shining, the room was originally 217 but they changed it to 237 because the hotel used for filming had their own room 217 and there were concerns people would be afraid to stay there after the release of the movie. As such, they changed it to 237, since there was no room 237 in the hotel. Personally, I think it would have made a great selling point.
